Protect and clean your carpet

Carpet care

It seems everybody has recommendations for cleaning a carpet. Suggestions from friends, family, or neighbors offer a variety of methods for cleaning and spotting carpets. However, good intentions are not always blessed with the best results. For the do it yourself person wanting to remove stains here are a few suggestions to think about.

For stains, dab the stain with a cleaning solution and blot it with paper towels, sponge, or a clean cloth. Always blot from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading the stain. Some say club soda is effective for wine stains. If that doesn’t work you might try one part white vinegar with one part water. Put it in a spray bottle and spray the stained area. Let it sit for ten to fifteen minutes to soak in. Then use a clean sponge to soak up the solution. You may have to repeat the process to completely eradicate the stain. Once the stain is gone rinse the spot with warm water, and use your hand or brush to brush the strands in their natural direction. One other suggestion I thought interesting is using regular shaving cream applied directly to the stain. Apply it, let it sit for thirty minutes, and blot it away with a dry clean cloth. You may want to finish the job with vinegar mixed with water while blotting the spot once again. Next time I will talk about removing gum, wax, and pet stains. One last thought.
